Rental scam
The Douglas Co. Sheriff's Office would like to inform citizens of a house rental scam that occurred in Douglas County.  On Monday, November 1st, a 30 year old Roseburg woman responded to a Craigslist ad, listing a house for rent on Monterey Drive in Roseburg. The woman was instructed to send the rent money, $1,500.00, via Western Union to an address in the United Kingdom. Prior to sending the money, the woman called the courthouse and confirmed the homeowner's name matched the name of the person she was dealing with on Craigslist.  After the victim sent the money, she drove past the house and noticed a property management sign out front. She called the property management company and learned the house was already rented and she had been scammed. Apparently the scammer had gotten the property owner's name from assessor files and pretended to be the property owner.  The Sheriff's Office would like to remind citizens to use caution when making transactions via the internet. Craigslist has a page on how to avoid scams. The top two things suggested by Craigslist to avoid being scammed are:  * DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON; * NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service.
