For the third year in the row the "Bay Area Grid Iron Crown" has gone to North Bend.  The 2-0 Bulldogs, behind senior Hamilton Mateski's four touchdown passes and one on the run, scored a 49-16 win over Marshfield in the 2012 rivalry game played Friday night at Vic Adams Field at North Bend.  Mateski, who as a sophomore threw a half-back pass to snap a long Pirate winning streak back in 2010, was solid in the Coach Gary Prince's shotgun formation offense.  At 6-5 and 225 lbs., he was also a big problem for Marshfield tacklers.  Mateski thew for 263-yards and ran for 91 more.  Marshfield also didn't help itself by committing eight turnovers in the game to the Bulldogs one.  Mateski opened the scoring with a 21-yard pass to Ty Roane.  Junior Mason Laird scored on a two-yard run with 23.5-second to go in the opening frame.  Junior Zach Hawk scored on a 30-yard fumble recovery in the second on a Pirate pass play.  Mateski then hit sophomore Cameron Lucero with a 29-yard strike to push the score to 29-0.  With 6:56 to go in the second, the Pirates got into the Bulldog end zone on a Jason Sweet to Skyler Harvey 16-yard pass play.  The senior Harvey stepped in for starter Alex Brown after the junior took a hit that sent him to the bench.  The 5-5, 135 lb. running back responded with quickness, hard running and positive yards for the Pirates.  He had 95-yards rushing in the game.  In the fourth, with 8:04 to go, he got his second TD on a nifty 24-yard run.  North Bend (2-0) travels to Cottage Grove this Friday, while Marshfield (0-2) has a 5A Midwestern League opener at North Eugene.

Marshfield placed fifth in both the boy's and girl's cross country races in Eugene Friday to open the 2012 prep season at the Marist Invitational.  The host Spartans won the ten team girl's race, while North Valley took the boy's.  The Pirates were led by junior Shaylen Crook, who was fifth overall (20:13) on the 5,000 meter course.  Senior Jasmine Meline placed ninth (21:50), followed by Lauren Tripp (31-24:24), Isabel Groth (36-24:40), and Katelyn Rossback (58-27:40).  Senior Connor Devereux, who was fourth overall, led the Pirate boys with a sixth place finish (17:05).  He was followed by Colby Gillett (19-18:09), Dakota Pittullo (35-18:52), Sawyer Heckard (36-18:55), and John Hampton (54-19:55).  Marshfield's JV boy's team placed sixth.  Will Gagon was 20th overall (21:41), followed by Sam Compton (24-21:51), Dylan Hiller (25-21:53), Cody Harkins (28-22:15), Carter Carr (32-22:26), and Ryder McKee (61-24:34).  Coach Doug Landrum, "  About an hour into our trip to Eugene I was reminded of why I like living on the coast. The temperature kept climbing. I'm not sure what it was at race time but it's safe to say the predicted 88 degrees was hit. We had a few strong performances by our athletes who have put in significant quality work this summer. Shaylen placed 5th with a solid opening mark of 20:13. That's 30 seconds faster than she opened the season with last year on the same course and last year the weather was much cooler. Jasmine looked pretty healthy, which is all I need to see with her. The rest of our gals survived, and honestly that was priority number 1 for this meet. Connor placed 6th in the varsity men's race with a time of 17:05. Colby and Sawyer looked very good in their races. I saw some potential among our young guys in the jv race. We need at least a few of them to emerge during the next 6 weeks to fill out our varsity squad. I will know much more about our team after Tuesday's meet at Tugman Park. Most of the variables such as weather and travel will be in our favor and it will be an opportunity to turn the team loose and see how fast they can run a 5k."
